Insight

Some towns in Wales are struggling and have experienced decline in recent years. At the same time, the uneven spread of economic activity and jobs also affects places and communities that are further from traditional hubs of work and finance and is evident in the inequalities that exist between people and places.

Idea

Anchor towns have a large population nearby, strong local transport networks, growth potential, key anchor institutions. They act as counterweights to regional imbalances and help to build an inclusive and fair economy from which everyone can benefit by tapping into all that these towns and the places nearby have to offer.

Impact

Our advocacy of the development of Anchor Towns continues to receive growing interest within and beyond Wales from developers, planners, local authorities and expert organisations such as the Bennet Institute, as a way to reduce inequalities between places and people.
