New Bevan Foundation report reveals that legal aid for immigration and asylum in Wales is on the brink of collapse.

The Bevan Foundation’s Access to Justice project is working to increase access to immigration advice and legal representation in Wales.

This report examines the sustainability of legal aid in Wales, and outlines key recommendations to protect immigration legal aid services in Wales.

This report finds that :

  • In the last five years, Wales has lost nearly half of its premises providing immigration legal services
  • The collapse of the immigration legal aid sector is having a major impact on the capacity of other legal providers. Many providers of free immigration legal services are not accepting new referrals.
  • Most low-income non-asylum applicants are unable to access justice, even where there is a risk that their human rights will be breached.
  • Providers are suffering stress and psychological pressure caused by trying to work in a broken system.
