Patients who need expensive, newly-developed medicines are not necessarily able to get them prescribed on the NHS, causing serious difficulty for people who are already unwell and generating frustration for health care professionals. Wales has taken a different approach to the availability of such medicines compared with England, but despite claims that the issues have been resolved patients, professionals and the pharmaceutical industry report problems.  

Sir Michael Rawlins, Chair of NICE, was the keynote speaker at a conference on this issue – this report includes summaries of all presentations as well as notes of the discussion.
