The Welsh Government ringfenced a further £25m to improve the valleys

Economy Welsh valleys

Insight

The south Wales valleys are home to almost 800,000 people. As a result of reduction of industry and successive economic downturns, some valleys communities have weak local economies and not enough local, quality jobs which lie at the root of some big challenges around jobs, skills, health and well-being.

Idea

We have advocated for dedicated, ringfenced resourcing with a specific focus on the valleys, especially the heads and the hearts of the valleys. This resourcing should be used to address the economic challenges experienced in some parts of the valleys.

Impact

In 2016 the Welsh Government created a Taskforce dedicated to helping regenerate the valleys, which included an allocation of £25m for the development of strategic hubs.
