The Bevan Foundation has shared it’s ideas on the priority areas for the Children, Young People and Education Committee

The Bevan Foundation has outlined the three areas it believes the Children, Young People and Education Committee should prioritise in its scrutiny of the Welsh Government.

  • Free School Meals – The Welsh Government is currently undertaking a review of Free School Meals eligibility. We believe that there is value in the committee prioritising Free School Meals, even if the Welsh Government do decide to proceed with expanding provision, to ensure any reform is implemented as effectively as possible.
  • Financial Support for learners in Further Education –  The Bevan Foundation’s Learning a living, better support for post 16 learners report highlighted that the value of support provided to young people from low income households to continue in further education has fallen in real terms.  We believe that there is a need to review the way support is provided, a need that has been heightened by the economic impact of the pandemic on the job market.
  • Childcare – We believe that the Committee should undertake a review into the Welsh Government’s childcare offer. Whilst the childcare offer is highly valued by thousands of families all over Wales, the Bevan Foundation and others have unearthed a number of shortcomings with the policy as it is currently implemented that negatively affects low income families.
