New report on child poverty receives significant media coverage
Monday 6th June saw the publication of a new report on Child Poverty by Loughborough University. The report showed that at least one in five children live in poverty in all Welsh local authorities, and was commissioned by the End Child Poverty Network, which the Bevan Foundation is proud to be a member of. As network members, we were pleased to be able to play a role in supporting the promotion of the report’s findings in the media.
The new analysis drew significant interest from the broadcast media. Our Head of Policy (Poverty), Dr Steffan Evans, was interview live in the studio for BBC Wales Today. He also appeared on S4C’s Newyddion, on ITV Wales, and on several radio stations including BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and stations produced by both Global and Bauer radios.
The Bevan Foundation’s analysis on the new report also featured in a variety of digital and non digital written press outlets. There were stories about the report in Welsh and English on the BBC’s website, in the Western Mail, on Walesonline, Nation.Cymru and the Cambrian News among others.
With such significant media coverage it is perhaps not surprising that the report generated some political interest as well. The report was raised by Plaid Cymru interim leader, Llyr Gruffydd during First Minister’s Questions, with the First Minister revealing that a draft of the Welsh Government’s Child Poverty Strategy is due to be published imminently.
