Minister for Climate Change outlines the Welsh Government’s plans to improve the energy efficiency of Welsh Homes

The Bevan Foundation have welcomed a statement made by the Minister for Climate Change in the Senedd on November 8. In a statement to plenary the Minister, Julies James MS outlined the Welsh Government’s plans for improving the energy efficiency of Welsh homes.

Amongst the announcements that the Bevan Foundation especially welcome was that the next iteration of the Welsh Government’s Nest Programme (it’s fuel poverty programme) would be in place before next winter. The Foundation was also pleased to hear the Minister make a commitment that the new programme would take a fabric first and worst first approaches.

Whilst there was much to welcome in the statement, there was a lack of detail with regards to several aspects of it. For instance, the Minister stated that the Nest programme would be replaced by a “demand led scheme”. This does sound like a positive development but the devil will be in the detail as to what impact such a change is likely to have on fuel poverty in Wales.

The Bevan Foundation will continue to monitor the progress of the Welsh Government’s work in this area and call for change.
