Our top five reads, based on the number of page views, are as follows.

1. Welsh Benefits System

Our work on establishing a Welsh Benefits System was incredibly popular.  The Case for a Welsh Benefits System kicked off the series and the final report, A Welsh Benefits System, rounded up the recommendations.  Interim reports on aspects of the system, such as how it could lift children out of poverty and help with housing costs, were also popular.

2. Where next for the Welsh economy?

Another big hit was our report on the impact of Coronavirus on the Welsh economy and the prospects for recovery.  Our calls for a major economic stimulus, revamped business support services and a focus on equality in work contributed to the Secretary of State for Wales’ and Welsh Government’s plans.

3. The experience of shielding

Although this was a small scale project, it had a big impact on how the Welsh Government has communicated with people who are shielding and on its forward planning. It highlighted the huge impact of shielding on people’s health and wellbeing, and suggested steps that could be taken to reduce it.

4. Reducing the impact of coronavirus on people in poverty

This was another small-scale project that made a big difference. This report looked at how the pandemic is deepening poverty for people trapped on a low income, as well as sweeping more people into its grip. It’s recommendations are being discussed with Welsh Government and others.

5. Transforming Wales: how Welsh public services and benefits can reduce poverty and inequality

Last, but definitely not least, our agenda for a social recovery in Wales has made the top five after just 10 weeks.  This report sets out a radical plan to reduce poverty and inequality – and at the same time create jobs and boost wellbeing – through investment in childcare, social care, education, housing and transport. This is a must-read report ahead of the 2021 elections.
