The coronavirus outbreak has brought unprecedented changes to the Welsh economy. This report outlines the evidence on the impact of the pandemic to date and calls for urgent government action to make Wales’ businesses fit for the future.

The coronavirus outbreak has hit Welsh business hard – and harder than elsewhere in the UK.  This report looks at the possible impact on Wales’ economic output, the number of temporarily and permanently closed businesses, and the effects on turnover and confidence.

It finds that many businesses are struggling to survive, with rural Wales and parts of the south Wales valleys facing the biggest challenges. Businesses must not only recover but be fit to meet the challenges of Brexit, climate change and automation.

We call for:

  • action to protect the supply of essential goods and services, which might include reshoring of activity or changes in ownership;
  • a major economic stimulus to support green infrastructure, social infrastructure and digital connectivity;
  • a transformation of business support services;
  • equity and inclusion to be embedded in all action.
