In the scrutiny of the Welsh Government’s draft budget for 2022-23, we argue that more and coherent investment is needed to end poverty.

The annual scrutiny of the Welsh Government’s draft budget for the coming year by the Senedd Finance Committe is underway. The Bevan Foundation’s written evidence has been submitted to the Committee and we will be giving oral evidence in January 2022.

In our response we:

  • welcome the steps taken by the Welsh Government to reduce the impact of the pandemic on people on low incomes;
  • urge the Welsh Government to take action in 2022-23 to prevent people falling into destitution, through a coherent system of Welsh benefits;
  • argue that action to solve poverty in the longer-term is still needed, focusing on decent work, an effective welfare system and a lower cost of living;
  • urge the Welsh Government to take a ‘whole economy’ approach to recovery, and to strengthen the labour market as well as businesses.
