Flexible working is on the up, with Wales already having one of the highest rates of flexible working. Flexibility offers employers many advantages, in that they can match employees to the volume of work very closely and sometimes employees themselves value flexible working. However, for many employees there are also considerable disadvantages – including uncertainty, lack of progression and poorer terms and conditions. When it looks as if flexible working is here to stay, this report looks at recent trends in the south Wales valleys, considers why employers chose flexible workers and identifies specific action that can be taken at local and all-Wales level to ensure that flexibility can also be sustainable.
