The Bevan Foundation has submitted written evidence to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee for its inquiry into benefits in Wales

Over the summer the UK Parliaments’ Welsh Affairs Select Committee called for written evidence as it began its inquiry into benefits in Wales. The Bevan Foundation have submitted a response that looked at a variety of issues relating to the way that the social security system operates in Wales. Among the issues considered in our response are:

  • The key challenges for the benefit system in Wales and how they differ from the other nations and regions of the UK
  • How effectively the UK benefits system tackles poverty and socio-economic inequalities in Wales as compared to England and Scotland
  • How the the COVID-19 pandemic changed the type and amount of support needed by people in Wales
  • How effectively the UK benefits system responded to these needs, and what else should the UK Government do to deliver the right support in Wales
  • How effectively the Welsh Government’s allowances and grants meet the particular needs of people in Wales
  • What reforms are needed to the benefits system and whether should there be further devolution of powers
  • How effectively the UK and Welsh Governments work together in the delivery of benefits in Wales
  • The implications of the Universal Basic Income pilot in Wales
