Response to the Green Paper on Local Government

The Bevan Foundation has submitted its response to the Green Paper on local government reform.

The Bevan Foundation’s response to the Welsh Government’s Green Paper ‘Strengthening Local Government, Delivering for People‘ argues that the Welsh Government needs to address the crisis in local democracy rather than redrawing boundaries and increasing confusion through joint arrangements.

The response says that the Welsh Government should instead aim to:

  • boost local democracy – through greater transparency, accountability and engagement
  • ensure councils are close to the community – by enhancing their role and adopting boundaries that fit with how people live and work
  • strengthening the role of councillors – by increasing diversity, supporting local political discussion and broadening their responsibilities.
