This short report takes the evidence on ‘what works’ to reduce in-work poverty to produce recommendations on labour market policy in Wales.

It’s a must-read for everyone interested in employability, skills, work and poverty.

Work is widely recognised as the best route out of poverty, but it doesn’t guarantee an escape. A ground-breaking study by the University of Birmingham, University of Coventry and LSE has identified the most effective types of intervention.

This short briefing says that it is vital that efforts to increase employment are coupled with support for progression in work and action to improve the quality of employment, to create a genuinely inclusive labour market. The briefing also highlights the importance of the total number of jobs in a local labour market as well as recommending that sector-specific programmes can also be helpful.
