Consultation response: the Welsh Government’s 2017/18 budget

The Bevan Foundation has responded to a consultation by the National Assembly for Wales Finance Committee on the Welsh Government 2017/18 budget proposals.

In its response to the Finance Committee, the Bevan Foundation highlights the significant cost of poverty to the Welsh public purse and argues that spending on increasing prosperity for everyone and cutting poverty is one of the most cost-effective actions the Welsh Government could take – a reduction in poverty to the UK rate of 21% could save around £0.4 billion a year.  It says that the Welsh Government budget for 2017/18 should put reducing pvoerty at its centre.

The Bevan Foundation also draws attention to the challenges of demographic change, climate change and technological change and urges that the draft budget takes a long-term, strategic approach to the allocation of funding.

The evidence will inform the Committee’s report which is laid before the Assembly when it debates whether to approve the budget.
