The second in our series of ‘Can Welfare Work for Wales’ events saw Owen Smith MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, deliver the keynote address.DSC_0028

Owen Smith spoke about the impact of social security reforms on Wales, and what Wales and the rest of the UK must do to strengthen its economy and welfare system. He gave an impassioned plea for Wales not to look inwards, but rather champion values of fairness and justice for those who are worse off at a UK level.

Owen’s speech was followed by a panel discussion with representatives from Working Links, Shelter Cymru and Age Cymru who discussed their observations of how welfare reform has worked in Wales and their recommendations for how social security can do more to meet people’s needs.

This series of events are part of the Bevan Foundation’s Making Welfare Work for Wales’ project. Learn more about our work on this here.
