On Monday 16th November the Bevan Foundation hosted the first in its series of ‘Can Welfare Work for Wales’ events, with Leanne Wood AM, Leader of Plaid Cymru, as the keynote speaker.
Over 80 attendees gathered in the Pierhead, Cardiff Bay, to discuss how the benefits system can be a better fit with Wales’ needs. Leanne Wood delivered a passionate speech about her observations of the impact of welfare reform on Wales, and how she would like to see the devolution of social security progress.
The event launched our ‘Making Welfare Work for Wales’ project, with a presentation delivered by the Bevan Foundation’s Director, Victoria Winckler. Attendees also heard from representatives from Bron Afon Community Housing, Samaritans and The Trussell Trust who spoke about the impact of welfare reform on those who use their organisation’s services.
