With more people experiencing social isolation and loneliness, this report reviews the role of befriending support in Merthyr Tydfil

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a double impact with more people affected by social isolation and loneliness than before. The depth of loneliness has also increased. Befriending support could provide a way of tackling the issue.

Tackling rising levels of social isolation and loneliness

During the pandemic the Bevan Foundation has been working closely with VAMT to examine its impact. In a previous report we identified the value placed on the role of befriending activities in tackling rising isolation. To examine the role of befriending support more closely, VAMT commissioned the Bevan Foundation to carry out a review of local befriending services.

The review found that befriending activities have been a valuable source of support for people experiencing social isolation and loneliness. However, there are concerns about how organisations will meet the growing need for support. It is argued that without proper investment and funding, organisations will be limited in what support they can provide.

Key recommendations

The review identified a number of key recommendations:

  1. Adopt a local strategic approach to social isolation and loneliness.
  2. Identify levels of need across the borough.
  3. Ensure a sufficient level of funding to enable the delivery of support.
  4. Strengthen the existing befriending network to ensure a joined-up approach.
  5. Ensure  support is of a high standard by providing investment in management and training.
