In 2004 Ruth Lister, Professor of social policy at Loughborough University, gave the third Aneurin Bevan memorial lecture – ‘Poverty and Social Exclusion: Recognition and Respect’ – sponsored by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation. Following in the footsteps of Gordon Brown and Peter Hain Prof. Lister aimed to highlight the link between poverty and socio economic inequality and emphasising the the political and policy implications of these issues.
