How should Wales’ universities respond to a post-Brexit Wales? This think piece sets out some ideas.

Brexit has potentially deep and far-reaching effects for many organisations, including Wales’ universities. As well as the immediate impacts on staff, students, funding and participation in European networks, Brexit raises questions about the role of higher education in a rapidly-changing economy and society.

This report, commissioned by Universities Wales, aims to identify the possible roles that Welsh universities can play in the future. It brings together and develops many of the themes in the civic mission being developed by universities, and builds on the work of a number of HE institutions.

The four roles identified in the report are:

  • universities as economic anchors, contributing to the development of Wales’ economic regions through their employer and purchasing powers;
  • universities as beacons of expertise, contributing their expert knowledge to help solve the many ‘wicked issues’ in Wales and beyond;
  • universities as centres of flexible learning, providing good quality training and education to the current and future workforce;
  • universities as equalisers, supporting social mobility by enabling and encouraging participation by people from all backgrounds.
