Our latest Snapshot of Poverty survey evidences the terrible toll the cost-of-living crisis continues to take on many in Wales.
Since 2021, The Bevan Foundation’s snapshot of poverty surveys have provided regular updates on living standards in Wales.
This report provides an up-to-the-minute insight into how people in Wales were managing with the cost of living at the beginning of autumn.
Key findings
The survey reveals a picture of stagnation in Welsh living standards: indicators of hardship remain at much the same level as they have for several years, despite the return to more normal rates of inflation. Across Wales, many continue to be unable to afford the essentials. At the same time, rates of borrowing and arrears on bills continue to steadily increase, highlighting the terrible toll that the crisis is having on people’s lives.
The crisis not affecting people across Wales equally: the majority of people who have a disability or health condition which significantly limits their day-to-day activities have seen their mental and physical health deteriorate as a result of their financial situation. Significant numbers of parents of children are going without food and other essentials, and many children are unable to participate in educational and social activities due to financial hardship.
The results raise concerns that without concerted action to boost the incomes of thousands of families across Wales either experiencing hardship or at risk of experiencing hardship, we will continue to see health and wellbeing damaged, undermining the Welsh Government’s aims to improve public services and to grow the economy.
