Priorities for the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee

The Bevan Foundation is calling for the National Assembly for Wales’ Health, Social Care and Sport Committee to consider services for people with mild to moderate mental illness.

The Assembly’s Health, Social Care and Sport Committee has invited views on its priorities in the fifth Assembly. The remit of the Committee is to examine legislation and hold the Welsh Government to account. It does this by scrutinising expenditure, administration and policy matters, including physical, mental and public health and well-being of the people of Wales, and the social care system.

The Bevan Foundation has submitted its response to the consultation. We identified a total of eleven areas that we suggest should be scrutinised by the Committee. These include:

• the effectiveness of interventions to promote public health amongst low income groups;
• the provision of mental health services, especially to parents;
• the deprivation of liberty of people in social care settings.
