The Bevan Foundation is calling for the National Assembly for Wales’ Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee to continue its scrutiny of poverty.

The Assembly’s Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee has invited views on its priorities in the fifth Assembly. The remit of the Committee is to examine legislation and hold the Welsh Government to account. It does this by scrutinising expenditure, administration and policy matters, including housing, local government, community regeneration, cohesion and safety, tackling poverty, equality of opportunity and human rights.

The Bevan Foundation has submitted its response to the consultation. In it we welcome the Committee’s suggestion that it completes its work begun in the previous Assembly on poverty.

We also suggest that the Committee’s scrutiny of local government includes the purpose and accountability of local authorities not just boundaries.
