GP services are a lifeline for older people, but more and more are finding it difficult to access them. This timely report with Age Alliance Wales looks at the evidence and listens to older people’s experiences. It urges the Welsh Government, local health boards, GP practices and Community Health Councils to take action.

This report has been prepared in partnership with Age Alliance Wales. It begins by looking at the different definitions of access, then reviews current Welsh Government policy aimed at improving it.

It then considers the views of around 400 older people across Wales, and finds that while most have huge respect for the GP, many are having considerable difficulty accessing GP services. The difficulties are all the greater for older people who are disabled – we heard some experiences that have no place in 21st century health care.

The report concludes with some robust recommendations for action.
