December saw the Bevan Foundation’s work around poverty, housing and the economy receive extensive media coverage

Welsh Government Draft Budget

On 10 December, the Welsh Government published its Draft Budget for 2025-26. The spending plans were covered by a number of media outlets which mentioned the Bevan Foundation’s upcoming role in scrutiny. These included the South Wales Argus, South Wales Guardian and Herald Wales, as well as a range of local media such as Mon FM, Western Telegraph and Wrexham.com.

Housing

Our insights around the supply of social homes were referenced in articles around homelessness in Wales in the Western Mail and Wales on Sunday. Elsewhere, our report with Shelter Cymru on the realities of living in temporary accommodation was mentioned in an article by Senedd Research on rapid rehousing and the NRLA published a round-up of their November events, highlighting the contribution of our Senior Policy & Research Officer, Wendy Dearden.

Poverty

In December, we published a report with Barnardo’s Cymru with new insights around ending poverty among families with a 0-4 year-old. The key findings were covered by Morning Star, South Wales Argus, MSN News, Yahoo News and on the blog On a quiet day.

Childcare was on the agenda in December with a Plenary debate on the Senedd’s Equality and Social Justice Committee’s report, Their future: our priority? Childcare in Wales. The Bevan Foundation’s work on childcare helped to inform an article by Senedd Research around the key issues facing parents and providers.

Our work on fuel poverty was also mentioned in articles by Herald Wales and Brecon & Radnor Express, while Director, Victoria Winckler, discussed how fintech can help people on low incomes in Business News Wales.

Migration

An article from The Pinnacle Gazette in December highlighted our work around the hardship caused by the No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition. In the article, our Access to Justice Project Lead, Isata Kanneh is quoted as saying that “more radical action” is needed in Wales to effectively combat poverty among children, especially among families affected by NRPF.
