Throughout November, the Bevan Foundation’s work has received extensive media coverage
Poverty
November saw the release of our latest Snapshot of Poverty report, our regular survey of living standards in Wales. Our findings that the cost-of-living crisis tends to take a terrible toll on people in Wales were covered by a range of news outlets such as Deeside.com, Morning Star, Barry and District News, West Wales Chronicle, South Wales Argus, MSN News, Arsyllfa Cymru, alt.cardiff and Cambrian News. The findings have also informed Mind Cymru’s first Big Mental Health Report, published in November.
On TV and radio, Head of Policy (Poverty), Steffan Evans, highlighted the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and rising energy prices on ITV Wales News, BBC Radio Wales and Global radio stations. Steffan also appeared on BBC Radio Wales to discuss Education Maintenance Allowance.
In her latest Business News Wales column, our Director, Victoria Winckler, discussed the key research our recent report, Money management apps: help or hindrance for low-income households?
Housing
Our recent insights into temporary accommodation and the supply of social homes in Wales were covered by BBC Wales online and on television, including S4C. Head of Policy, Steffan Evans was quoted as saying:
We know that the Welsh government has got its 20,000 affordable homes target… but that target can’t be the end, we need to go further than that.
Some of the Bevan Foundation’s previous housing work also received media attention this month. Our research around Local Housing Allowance was mentioned in articles by Propertymark and property118.com, calling for LHA rates to be raised. And our 2022 survey of Airbnb listings was referenced in articles by North Wales Live and Caernarfon Herald.
Economy
The Autumn Budget and its impact on Wales was a hot topic in November. Director, Victoria Winckler, wrote an article for Business News Wales highlighting the impact of the Budget changes on employees, affecting almost 1.3 million people in Wales.
Later in the month, Victoria gave evidence to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee’s inquiry on the impact of the budget on Wales. News of the meeting was covered by the South Wales Argus, MSN News and Yahoo News.
