The Bevan Foundation has been awarded a £1,000 grant thanks to the hard work of a group of Year 8 pupils at Morriston Comprehensive School.

Through the First Give programme, secondary school students have the opportunity to learn about social issues in their community. They are tasked with finding a charity they want to support through social action. The pupils at Morriston conducted bake sales and raised an impressive total sum which will be split between all the chosen charities.

On Friday, the school hosted its Grand Final with a packed auditorium in attendance including representatives of the nominated charities.

A team from each class presented what they’d learned about their chosen charity and the issues they work on in front of a panel of judges including the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Paxton Hood-Williams, and their peers. Our Policy and Research officer, Joel Davies, was in attendance to listen to the presentations and meet the students to hear all about their hard work.

The group that had chosen the Bevan Foundation were judged to have carried out the most effective combination of social action and presentation work, and won the grand prize of £1,000 to donate to us.

Thank you

We were impressed by the quality of the work carried out by all of the students, and we’re incredibly grateful for the efforts of school and First Give staff in facilitating Friday’s event.

But most importantly, we must say a special thank you to Team Bevan! The donation you have won for us is a significant contribution which will enable us to continue our work on tackling poverty and inequality in Wales.
