In the News – March 2023

Bevan Foundation A stack of newspapers
NewsApril 5th, 2023

The Bevan Foundation’s work featured in a range of media outlets in March, especially following the UK Spring Budget announcement.

Spring budget

Highlight of the month was coverage of our work in relation to the Spring Budget. Ahead of the Chancellor’s announcement, our Snapshot of Poverty in Winter 2023 report was informed Wales TUC Cymru’s Spring Briefing on the under-resourcing of public services for 12 years. Questioning the future direction of the Welsh economy, the Morning Star drew on the same report to highlight the cost-of-living crisis in Wales. The Big Issue also drew on our LHA findings in scrutinising the Spring Budget.

Our response to the Spring Budget was cited in a research briefing by the House of Commons Library published on the March 16th.

Budget commentary on the Radio March 10th:

  • Our director, Dr Victoria Winckler, did Sunday Supplement on BBC Radio Wales
  • Head of Policy, Dr Steffan Evans, featured on Global Radio (Heart FM)

Housing

Our work on housing continued to hit the headlines. Referencing our work from last year, North Wales Live  highlighted the implications of holiday lets on homelessness and displacing people from communities.  Our most recent report on the housing crisis featured in an article from Propertymark on March 10th to show that Local Housing Allowance is falling short of meeting rents in the private rental sector in Wales. On the same day, Voice of Wales echoed our findings on LHA and the lack of housing available in Wales for those in receipt of housing benefit.
