Having our say on Politics Wales

The Bevan Foundation was pleased to contribute to BBC Wales’ flagship Politics Wales show, discussing poverty and what should be done to end it.

The Bevan Foundation’s Director, Victoria Winckler, appeared on BBC Wales’ Politics Wales show on Sunday 14th March 2021 to discuss possible solutions to poverty. Her contribution followed an item on Universal Credit, in which Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, admitted that Universal Credit had been cut too hard.

Victoria said that reforms to Universal Credit were urgently needed to address problems such as the five week wait as well as the low value of support. However she also said that there was more that the Welsh Government could do through the grants and allowances that it administers. These schemes should, she said, be simple to access and sufficient for people’s needs.

She then addressed the question of housing supply as well as affordability, and said that ultimately the continuing high levels of poverty that people face are a question of public and political will – poverty is not inevitable.
