Today we were pleased to share our findings from our work on shielding to Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil. In our recent work examining the experiences of people advised to shield we found that people can face social isolation and loneliness. For many, months at home, without contact with family, friends and the community has left them feeling lonely and abandoned.  Thinking ahead, many said they will continue to shield until a vaccine is found, and face more months at home. You can read the full report here.

We also shared emerging findings from a new project to identify practical solutions to support people in the Merthyr Tydfil area. The project is focussing on two key urgent challenges facing people who have been shielding:

  1. Combatting the impact of loneliness and isolation.
  2. Overcoming the impact of Covid-19.

Presenting at the workshop, Claire Thomas said “this was a great opportunity to provide feedback the findings from the national study , and also the emerging findings from our project exploring issues in Methyr Tydfil”. Claire found the workshop sessions helpful to understand the wider issues around social isolation and loneliness. It was also encouraging to hear what other organisations are doing to combat these issues.
