Lessons from lockdown: experiences of shielding

October 8th 2020

Bevan Foundation calls for more action to support people advised to shield

Experience of shielding

Our work looking at the impact of Coronavirus has found that more action is needed to support people who have been shielding.

The effects of the Coronavirus pandemic have been felt by everyone, but people advised to shield face additional challenges. Although the policy has been paused many people have reduced their ‘normal’ activities or are still shielding.

The Welsh Government and local authorities supported people during the pandemic by providing weekly essential food parcels. After shielding was paused they also published guidance. However, our report has found that many people have experienced a deterioration in their health and well-being. In addition,  people’s access to medical treatment stopped or reduced, and this is still an issue.

The report sets out a number of actions the Welsh Government and local authorities could make to improve the lives of people advised to shield.
