Bevan Foundation at Welsh Labour fringe

Steffan Evans joined Citizens Advice’s fringe meeting at Welsh Labour’s virtual conference on behalf of the Bevan Foundation

With Covid 19 meaning that we’re all still unable to meet in person party conferences have been forced to move online this autumn. Having joined Plaid Cymru fringe meeting a few weeks earlier, Steffan Evans was pleased to be able to join Welsh Labour for a fringe meeting on behalf of the Bevan Foundation.

The fringe meeting was organised by Citizens Advice Cymru and was chaired by their Director, Rebecca Woolley. The meeting was called to discuss the future of social security and joining the Steffan and Rebecca on the panel was Jane Hutt MS, Hannah Blythyn MS and John Griffiths MS.

Sharing some of the Bevan Foundation’s latest research on the case for establishing a Welsh Benefits System, Steffan Evans set out how the social security system is still failing too many people trapped in poverty. He outlined how establishing a Welsh Benefits System could lead to a more generous and fairer system of support for people who are trapped in poverty and provide families with a vital lifeline.

Speaking about the event Steffan Evans said “developing a social security system that’s fit for purpose has never been more important. Establishing a Welsh Benefits System could be transformational in this regard, lifting people out of poverty and reducing poverty”.
