To mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17th October 2019, the Bevan Foundation hosted a Twitter Chat on what should be done to end child poverty in Wales.
Twitter Chats are a new way for people to exchange ideas about a topic. With the Bevan Foundation as host and a team of four panellists on hand, we asked five open questions over an hour to which anyone could respond. A lively debate ensued, with at least 32 people contributing to the discussion.
The debate was wide ranging covering everything from whether work is still a route out of poverty to the opportunities denied children from low income families to the role of education. Here are a selection of comments:
.@BevanFoundation Agree with @markjhooper – poverty is a lack of money – not enough money to even pay for the (increasingly expensive) basics such as housing, food, warmth & travel #BFpovertychat

A5 Do we hear enough positive stories? Do we see people overcoming poverty on TV? Mainstream glamorises things that lead to poverty and debt like alcohol, gambling – trying to be something you are not, etc. #BFPovertyChat

A3. Education. It’s the magic bullet. Tony b had t do right. Education education education. And need to invest more where it matters most. And early years. The evidence is there. Act on it. #BFPovertyChat
