The Bevan Foundation was delighted to deliver the keynote presentation at Grŵp Cynefin’s Annual General Meeting in St Asaph on 26th September.

The AGM was attended by Grŵp Cynefin staff members, tenants and stakeholders from across north Wales.  The AGM began with a presentation on the housing association’s achievements over the past 12 months from Chief Executive, Shan Lloyd Williams. Achievements include the construction of new affordable housing, increasing take up of welfare benefits, and the work of Gorwel.

After the formal business, Dr Steffan Evans’ presentation looked at the connections between poverty and housing and considered what the social housing sector can do to solve poverty.  Steffan highlighted the difficult balancing act that Cynefin and other social landlords may face if, in line with the recommendations of the Affordable Housing Review, the sector moves towards a five year rent setting model. He argued that whilst a five year settlement may give social landlords greater certainty, they would need to be flexible in their approach to avoid rents becoming increasingly unaffordable for existing tenants. Steffan also highlighted the need for all social landlords to promote fair work within their supply chains and to continue all their good work promoting uptake of welfare benefits.

We are grateful to Grwp Cynefin for the opportunity to share our expertise.
