Today the Bevan Foundation will present lessons from the south Wales experience of transition away from coal at a conference in Cottbus, Germany. At the International Lusatia Conference of Future-oriented Regions, Helen Cunningham, project officer for Building Economic Resilience in the Valleys, will share how the south Wales coalfield has responded to the decline of coal and an assessment of initiatives by communities, businesses, government and public services to regenerate the valleys. Cottbus is a part of Germany where coal is still mined and is situated close to the Polish border. The conference will hear from speakers from across Europe on the transformations that have taken place across the European coalfields and offers an exciting opportunity to share experiences, knowledge and make connections.
