Our proposal for a tax on polystyrene packaging used in take-aways took a step forward in the Assembly in a proposed waste reduction bill.

Simon Thomas AM’s motion for a Bill on waste reduction that would put place requirements – including taxes – on food producers and retailers in respect of packaging was debated in the Senedd on 5th April 2017.  Mr Thomas quoted figures from the Bevan Foundation’s report on new taxes and argued that an innovative tax on packaging could level the playing field between recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

The motion was passed with 34 votes in favour and 12 abstentions.
