The first issue of the Bevan Foundation’s new Equality and Social Justice Briefings is published today, 19th May 2015.

The issue looks at inequalities in health, covering socio-economic inequalities and, where data is available, inequalities between people with characteristics protected under the Equality Act 2010 (gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religious belief and sexual orientation). The briefings offer:

  • a unnique insight into how people’s social class and characteristics shape their health;
  • essential information to help organisations understand their customers or service users better and plan their activities;
  • rapid access to vital statistics to support campaigning.

The health briefing covers internationally-agreed key indicators of health, including:

  • life expectancy
  • infant mortality
  • deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease
  • deaths from injury
  • reported general health
  • mental health
  • unhealthy behaviours including smoking, consumption of fruit and vegetables, alcohol consumption, physical activity and being overweight or obese
  • low birthweight
  • environmental quality (overcrowded housing).

The briefing is one of six a year, published bi-monthly in PDF format emailed to you or in the members’ area of the website.  A subscription costs £255 a year plus VAT or is FREE as part of organisations’ Bevan Foundation membership.
