The Bevan Foundation has backed new research by the Resolution Foundation which shows that the number of self-employed jobs in Wales increased by 10,000 between 2008 and 2013 while the number of traditional “employee” positions crashed by 46,000.
Victoria Winckler of the Bevan Foundation said: “Self-employment is often simply a contractual trick to shift the risk from the employer, and is no longer a sign of entrepreneurship. Self-employment is often a very unreliable way of earning a living, and is associated with relatively low incomes not great riches. The recession has brought some dramatic shifts in the labour market, with ordinary people bearing the brunt, with self-employment being just one feature. Perhaps we should more accurately call it casual employment.”
