The Bevan Foundation was delighted to partner with WEA South Wales to celebrate International Women’s day on 8th March 2013.

The event, entitled “The Impact of Welfare Reform on Women in Wales – Empowering Women and Girls in Wales”, was held at the Ringland Centre in Newport and included the presentation of the Siân Thomason Award.

The event was well attended by delegates from a wide range of organisations, and and featured a mix of questions and discussion, together with workshops on women campaigning against cuts, women managing money and the role of credit unions, issues affecting young women and girls, skills and knowledge for active and empowered citizenship, and how women and girls empower themselves to get off benefit and into well-paid work.

Ruth Spellman OBE, General Secretary of WEA England and Scotland, (formerly CEx of Chartered Management Institute) gave an interesting and thought-provoking presentation of the ‘Women at the top table – research and testimony from a national and international setting’; her speech can be downloaded here.
