Minister Marks Robert Owen Day

Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, Huw Lewis AM, put co-operatives at the centre of his vision for Wales’s housing in a keynote speech to guests at a lunch, organised by The Co-operative Membership Cymru Wales and the Bevan Foundation, to mark Robert Owen day and the 2012 UN International Year of Cooperatives.

Other speakers included Cathy Ferrier, Fundraising and Supporter Marketing Director at Oxfam GB, who reflected on the longstanding relationship between Oxfam and The Co-operative. She also touched on how fundraising from The Co-operative next year will be spent on co-operative projects in Africa. Elin Rowlands a mentor at Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr along with two Sixth Form students described a recent trip to Lesotho organised with Dolen Cymru. Students were given the chance to experience first hand the work of the charity and see how fundraising from The Co-operative in 2012 will be spent.

Distinguished guests included Rosemary Butler AM; Martin Mansfield, General Secretary of the Wales TUC; Barclay Davies, Chair of the Cymru/Wales Values & Principles Committee of The Co-operative Group; Andrew Lewis, Managing Director of Monmouthshire Building Society and Sharon Angus-Crawshaw, Director for Wales of ABCUL.

Ashely Drake Wales Manager of The Co-operative Membership said “We are delighted that the Minister’s commitment to co-operatives will take forward the co-operative movement, founded by Robert Owen, into the 21st century in Wales. We are pleased that so many people from different walks of life joined with us on this important day.”
