Superb training on how to understand poverty and take action.

Unfortunately this event is now postponed to a future date.  If you are interested in attending, please register and we will let you know arrangements in due course.

Venue:  Orbit Business Centre, Merthyr Tydfil

Across Wales, more than one in five people is trapped in poverty. A new duty on public bodies will require them to ‘have regard’ to socio-economic disadvantage. To comply with their new duty, organisations will need to understand the scale and nature of poverty in their areas.  They will also need to plan action to reduce poverty carefully.

This course has been designed by the Bevan Foundation, Wales’ leading authority on poverty, to help you to understand poverty in your area and meet your legal obligations. Your trainers will include Victoria Winckler and Steffan Evans, who together have more than 40 years of experience working on poverty and inequality in local government and the third sector.

Aims

To understand the causes and consequence of poverty and to be able to plan effective action to reduce it.

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • understand different definitions and measurements of poverty
  • be able to access sources of data on poverty and inequality in their area
  • be aware of the root causes of poverty
  • have skills necessary to engage with people with experience of poverty
  • demonstrate that they have had due regard to socio-economic disadvantage in reaching decisions.

Who should attend?

The course is for anyone who wants to understand and take action to reduce poverty, but it is especially likely to be useful for professionals working in local authorities, housing associations, health boards, and fire and rescue authorities.
