The 2013 Bevan Prize for Health and Wellbeing

EventsEvent Date: May 22nd, 2013  Time: TBC - TBC  Location: London

The Bevan Foundation is delighted to announce the inaugural Bevan Prize for Health and Wellbeing which it is today launching in association with the Aneurin Bevan Society.

The Bevan Prize will be awarded in recognition of an individual and group or organisation in any part of the United Kingdom who have made an outstanding contribution to health and well being in their field in the past year (1 January 2012-31 December 2012), who promote the founding values of the National Health Service: ie: comprehensive treatment, within available resources; universal access, based on need; and services delivered free at the point of delivery and work to ensure equality of access and equality of health outcomes.

Our National Health Service is comprehensive, available to all irrespective of gender, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, and has, according to its own constitution, a broader social duty to promote equality.

The Prize is a timely contribution to supporting the principles of the NHS at a time when those values are under threat, particularly in England. We hope to establish the Prize as an annual event to highlight and further these values and to provide a lasting tribute to the architect of the NHS, Aneurin Bevan.

We are seeking nominees from a wide range of backgrounds. Nominees could include health care practitioners and professionals; scientists, academics or researchers; authors, journalists or bloggers; voluntary and support groups; or campaigners and activists who over the last year (1 January 2012 to 31 December 2013) have made an outstanding contribution to health and well being in their field and promote the founding values of the NHS.

We look forward to celebrating achievements of individuals and organisations from across the UK who are working hard to protect and promote the ethos behind the National Health Service, one of our best loved national institutions.

Nomination process

Nominations are now open until 22nd May 2013. Entries will be shortlisted by our panel of judges in May/June 2013. The prizes (one recognising an individual and one recognising an organisation or group) will be awarded in London in July in conjunction with the 65th anniversary of the NHS.

Participants can be self nominated or nominated by a third party. Please fill in the Bevan Prize Nomination Form and email it back to [email protected]. All nominations require a short description of the role of the individual or organisation and how they have made their contribution, supported by two referees. We will contact shortlisted finalists to ensure, if they have been nominated by a third party, they are happy to be considered for the award and to verify evidence of their nomination.

Judging

Our panel of judges is made up of: Prof Sir Mansel Aylward, chair of Public Health Wales; Geoffrey Goodman, past Chairman and now honorary Vice-President of the Aneurin Bevan Society; and Jaselle Williams, Bevan Foundation trustee.
