What is it about?

Devolution has permitted the development of differing approaches to solving poverty. From the introduction of a Child Payment in Scotland to welfare reform mitigation measures in Northern Ireland, the governments in Holyrood and Stormont have demonstrated how things can be done differently.

Join our expert panel to learn more about the actions that have been taken in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and how effective they have been in solving poverty.

The Presenters:

Jack Evans

Jack Evans is Scotland Policy and Partnership Manager (Work) for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Before joining JRF Jack spent five years at the Poverty Alliance, leading their work on the real Living Wage working with employers from all sectors and industries to embed the real Living Wage in wage structures. Prior to entering the third sector in 2015, Jack was the Operations Manager of H&M in Scotland and before that worked at UK Anti-Doping.

Gráinne Walsh

Gráinne Walsh is Director of Stratagem, part of the Connect Group. Advisor to JRF in Northern Ireland, Gráinne has supported JRF’s political influencing and engagement strategy to shape thinking and policy on poverty at all levels of government locally as well as Westminster.

Kate McCauley

Kate McCauley is Head of Policy & Development at Housing Rights. Housing Rights is Northern Ireland’s leading provider of independent housing advice. Kate leads the organisation’s work to influence policymakers and to develop its services in preventing homelessness. Since 2018, Housing Rights has co-convened the Cliff Edge Coalition NI; a collective of over 100 organisations campaigning for the extension and strengthening of Northern Ireland’s welfare mitigations.

Steffan Evans

Steffan joined the Bevan Foundation in July 2018 after working as a participation officer at TPAS Cymru. Steffan is currently looking at poverty in Wales and has a particular interest in exploring solutions for in-work poverty and in examining how the social security system could be improved.
