Roundtable: The Welsh Safety Net – Children and Education (south)

The support available for low income families has a significant impact on their likelihood of living in poverty. As part of its project to better understand how that support is made available in Wales, the Bevan Foundation is delighted to host this roundtable discussion to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to share their views on the system currently in place in Wales.

What is it about?

One of the key factors that has an impact on the number of people living in poverty is the support that is made available to those on low income through the social security system. Whilst the primary source of support for people living on low incomes in Wales comes from the UK Government, the Welsh Government and Welsh local authorities also provide crucial assistance, helping ease some of the pressures on low income families.

As part of its project to seek a better understanding of the support that is available for people living on low income in Wales, and to identify what are the issues facing individuals when they seek to gain access to this support, the Bevan Foundation has recently explored the support that is available for families with children, or for young adults. Having heard directly from families about their experiences of accessing support, the Bevan Foundation is eager to hear from those who have had experience of operating the system in a professional capacity, be that through working at a local authority, in the education sector or in the third sector. In doing so, we hope to build a rounded understanding of how Welsh support schemes operate in practice, their strengths and their weaknesses.

This roundtable will provide interested stakeholders with an opportunity to share their experiences of how existing support schemes for low income families in Wales operate and to network and build connections with others working within the sector.
