The need for social housing is greater than ever with a record number of households living in temporary accommodation – accounting for one in every 215 households across Wales. Just at a time when social and community homes are needed the most, they are the most difficult to deliver. One of the main barriers is the availability of sites in the places where homes are needed.
Housing Justice Cymru’s Faith in Affordable Housing project has been promoting the potential of sites owned by faith-based organisations and brokering arrangements with registered social landlords and community groups to develop it.
Churches and chapels are just one of a whole host of community assets which may no longer be viable for their current purpose. Social housing can provide a future use for an important building in a community’s landscape as well as much needed affordable, secure homes. There is considerable potential to develop and scale up this work, but specific challenges in relation to the working with older buildings and the land surrounding them.
