The Bevan Foundation is delighted to welcome Keir Starmer QC to address a lunch on the theme of the Public and the Law
Keir Starmer, QC is a barrister in England and Wales and served as Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) between 2008 and 2013. He was perhaps the most high profile holder of this post in British history. During this period he helped transform Britain’s legal landscape on often-divisive issues such as assisted suicide, rape and domestic violence.
He is a defence lawyer with special expertise in the law of human rights. Acting in several appeals to the Privy Council for defendants who had been sentenced to death in Caribbean countries, his legal submissions led to the abolition of the mandatory death penalty in those countries. He was a human rights advisor to the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Association of Chief Police Officers. He is a member of the Foreign Secretary’s Death Penalty Advisory Panel. In 2007 he was named “QC of the Year”.
