A short course to increase your understanding of poverty in Wales and how to find out more.

What’s it about?

One in five people in Wales lives in poverty.  This introductory session will provide you with an essential overview, so that you can understand what is meant by ‘poverty,’ be aware of how it is measured, and have the tools to find out more.  The course covers the key sources of information about poverty and the pros and cons of using them.

The course can be joined as a stand-alone session or as a bundle with our follow-on course on Building a local profile of poverty on Thursday 27 March.

The course comprises 90 minutes of presentations by two experienced trainers, Victoria Winckler and Steffan Evans, with a 10 minute break.

What you’ll learn

The course will provide you with:

  • Understanding of key concepts
  • Main sources of data on relative income poverty and deprivation for Wales
  • Tips on uses of data.

To get the most out of this course, participants need to be able to use basic statistics (such as medians and percentages) and be familiar with using spreadsheets.

All participants will receive the slides and a recording of the session. The training will be delivered in English via Zoom.

Who should attend?

This session will be of interest to everyone concerned about poverty and deprivation in their communities, including people working in social landlords, local authorities, health boards, charities and the private sector.
