A short course to equip you with the tools to compile your own local profile of poverty.

What’s it about?

Poverty varies across Wales, with some areas having a relatively high proportion of people on low incomes while others have fewer.  Yet information on poverty in different communities is hard to find.

This short course will provide you with the tools you need to create a profile of poverty in your area.   It will introduce you to sources of data for local authorities or smaller areas so that you can build your own in-depth knowledge of your community.

This course can be joined as a stand-alone course or as a follow-on from our Introduction to understanding poverty course on Thursday 20 March (with a discount for attending both).  To join the course on a stand-alone basis, you’ll need to be familiar with key concepts and measures of poverty.

The course comprises two 40-minute sessions with a ten minute break, with Victoria Winckler and Steffan Evans as your trainers.

What you’ll learn

The course will provide you with:

  • A template from which you can construct a local profile
  • Understanding of key sources of data on household incomes
  • Understanding of key sources of data on household costs.

To get the most out of this course, participants need to be familiar with simple statistics (such as medians and percentages) and be able to use Excel or similar spreadsheets. All participants will receive the slides and a recording of the session. The training will be delivered in English via Zoom.

Who should attend?

The session will be of interest to everyone concerned about poverty and deprivation in their communities, including people working in social landlords, local authorities, health boards, charities and the private sector.

You’ll be able to apply your learning to:

  • target your services on people and places in greatest need
  • support funding bids
  • develop your organisation’s strategy.
