The economic impact of the pandemic has affected people across Welsh society, but it has not affected us all equally.

Poverty was already a significant problem in Wales long before Covid 19 struck, but the economic impact of the pandemic has exacerbated and deepened existing inequality.

The Presenters:

Catherine Fookes, WEN Wales

Catherine joined WEN Wales as Director in 2018. Catherine is responsible for the overall strategic direction of WEN Wales and pushing forward WEN’s vision of a transformed Wales, free from gender discrimination. She has sat on various Government boards and is Chair of the Gender Equality Review Advisory Group. Catherine is passionate about gender equality and social justice and has tried to ensure this is at the heart of everything she does both in work and outside of work as a school governor, as a trustee and as an active local campaigner.

Megan Thomas, Disability Wales

Megan has worked for Disability Wales as their Policy and Research Officer since May 2020. She is responsible for effecting change in public policy and influencing policymakers through the development of strong evidence-based policy positions; and to integrate policy positions with their influencing, campaigning and communications activity. She has been a disability and LGBT+ rights activist for many years and is a founding member of the online campaign That’s Devolved.

Dr Steffan Evans, Bevan Foundation

Steffan joined the Bevan Foundation in July 2018 after working as a participation officer at TPAS Cymru.

In 2018 Steffan graduated with a PhD from the Wales Governance Centre, at the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University. His research examined the impact of devolution on social housing regulation in Wales and England, exploring how and why the law had diverged between both nations.

Steffan is currently looking at poverty in Wales and has a particular interest in exploring solutions for in-work poverty and in examining how the social security system could be improved.
