A Right to be Treated? Taking Personal Responsibility for Health

EventsEvent Date: Oct 16th, 2013

1 in 4 people smoke, and the same number are classed as clinically obese. Together these represent the largest causes of avoidable ill health and early death in Wales.

From this autumn smokers and the morbidly obese will not be able to join a waiting list for treatment unless they go on a course to encourage them to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Where Cardiff and the Vale Health Board is leading, the rest of Wales will soon follow.

Is this a fair response to a public health emergency, or a step too far by the State? Will it work? And what do the public think?

The IWA, in association with the Bevan Foundation, have teamed up with BBC Radio Wales to debate the issues.

The key decision makers will be joined by the BBC’s Jason Mohammad live from the conference to discuss the evidence, and to let the public have their say.

  • Dr Sharon Hopkins, Director of Public Health, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board
  • Tam Fry, Chairman, Child Growth Foundation
  • Victoria Winckler, Bevan Foundation
